History of the World

A story will always have a beginning. That much can be said with certainty. Where that beginning happens is sometimes nebulous but can be found by those that read back through the pages of history. Countless tales have been told since time began, and countless more will doubtless end before the sands finish running through our existence. For our ease today, we’ll begin where it all began… the birth of Zaphora.
Now this is a topic that has been told in legend form many times, usually coinciding with Her dark opposite in a tale of peaceful cooperation and creation of the universe we all have come to know. Unfortunately, this is a near complete falsity…
The truth of it is that the darkness ruled before all… Shadows danced through the endless black void with no light to prove anything existed at all. It is from this lawless void that a sudden, revealing blast of light burst forth and stabilized its surroundings. However it was not the dragon that we all know, at least not yet. It was but an orb of consciousness, hovering alone in the abyss. An egg of something greater to come.
Zaphora spread her wings with another burst of light as She breaks the shell of Her egg. Casting youthful eyes around to the emptiness She had been born into and seeing there was nothing but shadow, She clung to the remnants of the egg and began to rebuild it back into a small sphere.
This egg would come to be the planet we mortal kind call home… Zaphoradraik, so named for the benevolent spirit and protector that created it. The darkness still remained outside the scope of the small creation the young dracoling now had to play with, surrounding and threatening to engulf the fledgling god. But here is where the concept of balance comes to form the present state of religion… because the more the shadows pressed against the young dragon’s light influence, the more it was influenced in turn. What was once a void of chaos and shadow would gradually straighten and lighten to form the stars and other planets that we observe today, distant dots of light in the blackened night sky.
Such things, while beautiful, were not in the focus of the newborn creator. Her’s was to play with the world She had deliberately made from Her own egg. With a touch of Her claw, great forests were formed from the hard outer shell, forming a solid patch of land and revealing the aether that swirled within. This aether would soon become the vast oceans covering our world and acting as a source for the life She would soon draw forth…
Pulling bits of life energy from the sea of aether, She crafted small creatures that spread themselves out over the otherwise empty landscape, climbing the trees and burrowing into the ground to inhabit the new world. However these were not sentient creatures… They could not comprehend their creator anymore than the mystery of day and night. The dragon, while happy to see Her world teeming with life, yearned for something more.
Though while trees and small creatures are one thing, sentience is quite another. For a young creator, it proved difficult. Though there was no shortage of practice to be had.
First were the pantherians, proud and powerful hunters that stalk their prey in silence. They gained their higher functions from an early alliance with the dragons, creatures made in Zaphora’s own image to help shape the world from within. These were times of peace and quiet learning, dragon and pantherian developing alongside each other. Zaphora watched them and smiled to see them happy, turning from them then to direct Her slowly growing experience to a new part of the world.
Zaphora was only a few hundred thousand years old by this time, still a hatchling by the cosmic scale… Yet She still felt the irresistible urge for balance. This lead to the Canids; a race cast as warriors to oppose the peaceful gatherers of the pantherians. She watched them struggle amongst themselves to establish a colony. As before, the dragons attempted to aid them but were chased away with spears. The dogs, while initially more intelligent than the pantherians had been, failed to grasp the simple concept of cooperation with others unlike themselves. An oversight of the young dragon and a mistake to be learned from as She proceeded to try again.
Fighters to keep the dogs in check, She thought, and seeing the great aid the dragons were being, took their design to create the scaled race of Lysard. Made to be vicious and warring to overpower the Canid’s rising aggression, She neglected to instill the peace that the original Pantherians had… As a result of this, the Lysard proved unable to access the stores of aether within the planet and so relied on constructing tools from the land.
Zaphora frowned at Her most recent two creations, saddened by the unhappiness and greed She felt from them. How could such negativity be balanced…? Heavenly claws were drummed upon the planet’s surface, sparking up a number of things that were allowed to go off in various directions. The peace-loving Lwokgians, the reclusive Insectids, the unshakable Taur, the innocent Pteribats, the conniving Allowen… Each of them are watched, and each are given a purpose and a place.
The Lwokgian and their island home are granted ample fields and mountains in which to nest and aid the larger bird-like creatures in their nesting. Gryphons and phoenixes call the ranges of Lwokgia home, sheltered from the machinations of the now warring nations of the Lysard, Canid, and Pantherian. This conflict would eventually grow into a world wide war, however every event has its place in time and this is one that I will explain later… For now, there are introductions yet to make.
Insectids are an odd race, keeping much away from their creator’s light. They skitter and hide, sealing away in caves and burrows to work their own way in peace. The other races grew to fear them, and this fear only added to the hostilities brewing amongst the world’s new inhabitants, pressing the peaceful race of monks to banish themselves to their own world. Zaphoradraik’s moon, a much smaller sister planet that had been drawn in by the dracoling’s playful tail, provided ample space for those displaced. They would go on to craft artifacts from the gems of power, many of which have found their way down to the planet’s surface… influencing the hearts and minds of mortals for good or ill.
But for every scholar, there are many laborers, and the Taur accept this yolk with trademark patience and even pride. Ever the hard working individuals, they can also be infuriatingly stubborn when they’ve made up their mind. They’ve had to fight for all they have, including lands in which to live… leading to the vastly varied nature of their race.
